Worship and Fortune-Stick Guide

Follow the numbered steps below. If anything is unclear, please ask the temple staff before proceeding.

Offering incense · 5 steps

How to offer incense

Incense offering route: facing the altar, enter right and exit left. The handwashing point is to the right of the entrance. Follow burners 1 to 6, and bow three times at the star marker before and after offering incense.

    Remove your hat and wash your hands

    If wearing a hat, remove it as a sign of respect.

    Adjust your clothing, wash your hands and take a moment to settle your mind.

    Take and light 18 incense sticks

    Take incense beside the main burner. Light it with the oil lamp or a lighter.

    Gently fan out any flame with your hand. Do not blow on it.

    Stand at the star marker and bow three times

    Face Kwan Tai and hold the incense in both hands, above your forehead.

    Express your wish sincerely, then bow three times.

    Offer 3 sticks at each burner, in order

    Follow the incense-order diagram on site. Use your left hand to place the incense.

    These numbers show the offering order. Check the on-site signs for the actual positions.

    Return to the star marker and give thanks

    Face Kwan Tai, bow three times and express your thanks.
    Leave according to the signs inside the temple.

How to seek guidance

Remember: ask about one matter at a time.

    Worship first, then seek guidance

    First pay respect to the deities in the temple, in order.

    Return to Kwan Tai’s altar, adjust your clothing and calmly prepare your question.

    Pass the divination tools over the incense and introduce yourself

    Take a pair of divination blocks and the fortune-stick container. Move them clockwise three times above the main incense burner.

    Silently state:

    • Your name
    • Your date of birth
    • Your current address
    • The one matter you wish to ask about

  3. 3

    Shake out one stick and note its number

    Hold the container with both hands. Think of your question and shake it gently.

    Let one stick fall out naturally, then note its number.

    Two or more sticks fall out?
    Return all of them to the container and try again.

  4. 4

    Cast the blocks to confirm the stick

    Ask Kwan Tai whether this is the appropriate fortune stick.

    You may cast the blocks up to three times for each stick.

    One affirmative result

    The stick is confirmed.
    Stop casting and collect its verse.

    A laughing or negative result

    If you have attempts left, cast again.
    If none of the three casts is affirmative, return the stick and draw a new one.

    Return to step 3 ↑

    Ask temple staff if you are unsure how to recognise an affirmative, laughing or negative result.

    Collect the verse and give thanks

    Collect the verse matching the confirmed number, or consult the interpretation book.

    Return to Kwan Tai’s altar and give thanks.

    If the verse is unclear, ask temple staff for help interpreting it.
